WESTPORT — Another state playoff game and another shutout for the Staples High baseball team.
The Wreckers got six superb innings from starting pitcher Hiro Wyatt and an inning of relief from Nick Porzio — combining to allow three hits while racking up 10 strikeouts — as the No. 3 Wreckers shut out No. 6 South Windsor, 7-0, in the Class LL State Tournament quarterfinals on Saturday.
Staples was coming off a 5-0 win over Newtown in the previous round.
With the win, the Wreckers earn a date with FCIAC rival Westhill of Stamford, the bracket’s No. 23 seed, in the semifinals Tuesday. The game will take place at 3:30 p.m. in Waterbury’s Municipal Stadium Complex.
The winner will face either No. 1 Newington or No. 4 Fairfield Warde in the championship round Friday, June 9, or Saturday, June 10. The Wreckers were edged 5-4 by Westhill in the regular season.
Ethan Cukier drove in three runs in the win over South Windsor. Jaron Kline hit a pair of doubles, while Holden Caney and Chase Siegel both had multiple hit performances.
