WESTPORT — The Staples High baseball team, backed by stellar starting and relief pitching, scored a pair of sixth inning runs to post a 4-2 victory over visiting Greenwich on Wednesday.

With the game tied 2-2 in the last of the sixth, Hiro Wyatt was at the plate with the bases loaded and one out, and came through with a go-ahead sacrifice fly. Jaron Kline followed with a line drive run-scoring double to right center for an insurance marker.

The Cardinals were sent down in order with Staples lefty Kai Nee striking out the side to close the game. Nee pitched 2.2 innings of shutdown relief, allowing no hits and one walk, and fanning six batters.

Pitchers Chris Zajac and Nick Porzio were sharp in holding Greenwich to just a pair of runs for much of the game.

The Cardinals jumped out to a 1-0 first-inning lead, and added another run in the second, but that was all they got.

Staples got on the board with a two-out rally in the first when Wyatt was hit by a pitch and Jaron Kline and Holden Caney followed with singles, Caney driving Wyatt home.

The Wreckers tied things at 2-2 in the third when Luke Oakley singled, stole second, and was driven in on a Wyatt single. Staples threatened for more in the inning, but left the bases loaded.

Staples cashed in on its opportunity in the sixth when two walks and a hit batter loaded the bases.

The Wreckers improved to 6-1 overall heading into a home game Friday, April 21, against Danbury at 4:30 p.m.
