WESTPORT — Staples baseball played three extra-inning games in four days this week. falling twice before coming out on top 4-2 in nine innings at St. Joseph of Trumbull on Thursday.
In the win, Mark Kelly had three hits, drove in a run in the sixth inning and scored the go-ahead run on Cole Landgraf’s single in the ninth. Bruce Schlegelmilch also drove in a run. Pitcher Ben Cukier tossed six shutout innings.
The Wreckers were coming off three hard-fought losses in a row.
They fell 2-1 to visiting Trumbull in eight innings on Monday and 5-2 in nine innings at Fairfield Warde on Tuesday. The team had also lost to Warde 11-9 on May 10.
Against Trumbull, Vincent Vega knocked in Kelly with the tying run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Kai Nee allowed one run on two hits and struck out seven Trumbull batters to keep things close throughout.
In the second Warde game, Jules Cicero had three hits and a run scored and Jake Goldshore and Landgraf each drove in runs. Andrew Oppenheimer allowed two runs in seven solid innings of work and also collected a pair of hits at the plate.
The Wreckers had a busy week, but the pitching staff got a little bit of a reprieve with a rainout Wednesday. Up next is a 10 a.m. Saturday visit to Fairfield Ludlowe at Kiwanis Field.
