WESTPORT — Back-to-back home games against Norwalk teams yielded split results for the Staples baseball team this week.
The Wreckers prevailed in a 2-1 nail-biter over Brien McMahon on Monday, but were walloped 14-1 by the Norwalk Bears on Wednesday.
Against the McMahon Senators, Andrew Oppenheimer pitched a complete game, allowing one earned run on seven hits. He struck out six and did not walk a batter.
What’s more, Oppenheimer helped his own cause with a hit, walk, run batted in and run scored. Jake Goldshore doubled and scored a run, and Vincent Vega knocked in a run.
Staples scored runs in each the second and third innings for a 2-0 lead and held on as the Senators pushed across a run in the sixth.
In the loss to Norwalk High, Cooper Brundige had a hit and an RBI and Cole Landgraf had a hit and scored the Staples run.
The Wreckers, 4-2, visit Stamford at 4 p.m. Friday. (Game schedules are subject to change; click for the latest CIAC updates.) Andy Hutchison has been covering school sports — including Staples athletics — as well as news and feature stories in Fairfield County, since the 1990s.
