WESTPORT — The goal of “Play It Forward,” an initiative organized by Sustainable Westport, is to find new life for unused sports equipment.

The idea, according to Sustainable Westport’s announcement, is to give “your gear a second life and provide you with the opportunity to find gently used equipment for the upcoming season.”

The group will collect used soccer cleats, shin guards and balls in preparation for the coming season, which can be dropped off from Friday, March 7, through Saturday, March 22, at Play it Forward bins at the Westport Weston Family YMCA, 14 Allen Raymond Lane.

On Monday, March 24, the group will host a Play it Forward Youth Soccer Donation and  Exchange, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Christ & Holy Trinity Church, 75 Church Lane. People will be able to browse through donated gear and shop for needed equipment. There is no need to have donated items in advance to participate in the March 24 exchange, according to organizers, and additional equipment also can be dropped off at the event.

Athletic gear that remains after the exchange will be donated to the Bridgeport Field of Dreams Foundation.

Sustainable Westport hopes to expand the program to cover more sports, and asks that anyone interested in getting involved email admin@sustainablewestport.org.
