WESTPORT–Staples girls golfers followed up a trio of road losses with two home victories. The Wreckers had lost at Darien and Fairfield Ludlowe in early April, then fell at Trumbull, shooting a 207 to the Eagles’ 180 on Monday. Then came home course success.

The Wreckers bounced back against Ludlowe with a 207-209 win on Wednesday and defeated Fairfield Warde a 202-260 defeat, both at Longshore Golf Course.

Against Trumbull, Lillian Hallett carded a 47, Katelynn Mitchell 51, Lucy Hill 56 and Bryn Lieberman 53.

In the Ludlowe match, Mitchell had a 48, Hill 51, Jaden Tracey 52 and Ryan McGrath 56.

“Our victory Wednesday day at home was a great bounce back from Tuesday’s loss at Trumbull to a very strong team that lost in the State Championship last year in a playoff hole,” Staples Coach Patty Kondub said. “Windy conditions, cloudy skies and low temperatures had a chilling effect on the Wreckers’ game after such beautiful weather last week during spring break.”

The bright spot at Trumbull was Hallett, a freshman, earning Staples’ medalist honors with her score of 47.

“There’s no place like home, as we notched our first victory in our home opener Wednesday at Longshore, sneaking past Ludlowe by two strokes 207-209,” Kondub said.

Mitchell, a senior captain, was Staples’ medalist with a 48 in the Ludlowe match.  Juniors Hill and McGrath contributed to the win, along with sophomore Tracey in her varsity debut.

Against Warde, Hill recorded the team’s first birdie of the season on the way to shooting a 47. McGrath also shot a 47, Mitchell carded a 52, Tracey a 58 for the scores that counted toward the team tally. Eliza Wadley also had a 50.

The Wreckers host New Canaan Wednesday, April 29 at 3 p.m.
