
WOODBRIDGE–The Wreckers varsity baseball team surprised favorite Amity Regional with an 8-2 walloping yesterday in the second round of the Class LL State Baseball Tournament.
The 15th-ranked Wreckers got good pitching and great hitting.
Junior Hiro Wyatt launched his third grand slam of the season, a Staples record. Senior Alex Oppenheimer got three hits, including a dinger, and stole a base.
Matthew Spada held powerhouse Amity to two runs on four hits with four strikeouts. He pitched all but the final out.
The Wreckers move on to the quarterfinals Saturday, for a 2:00 p.m. game at #10 Trumbull.
