WESTPORT–The Lady Wreckers hosted Westhill yesterday. Before the game, the team members got together and exhorted each other to play together — to win together — as a team. And they did.
Six different players scored goals on Thursday and the defense notched another shutout. Goalkeeper Mia Didio was excellent throughout the game, but none more so than with 15 minutes left she grabbed a screamer from Westhill to keep them off the board.
Sophomore Evelyn Chudowsky started the rout with an early goal from the top of the box.
Minutes later, Adeline Bozeman passed to Reilly McGeehan. McGeehan’s deft shot to the bottom right corner scored.
Chudowsky passed to McGeehan, whose shot hit the corner to make the score 3-0.
At 35 minutes, Leigh Foran passed to Finley Cohen–who scored.
Cohen returned the favor minutes later with a pass to Foran, who scored with fewer than four minutes in the first half. 5-0 Staples at the half.
In the second half, with their formidable defense bottling up Westhill, the offense did not relent.
Staples scored only twice in the second half, but twice hit the crossbar.
Izzy Ricks clanked four minutes into the half off a pass from Moskowitz. Nine minutes later, Captain Maddie Sansone carved through the Westhill defense and took a wonderful shot that banged off the crossbar, no goal.
Sansone was successful on her next shot to the left corner from the top of the box, making the score 6-0.
Staples’ final goal came off the foot of Katharine Spada, off a pass from Juliet Tracey.
Final 7-0.
The Wreckers drive up Route 7 to play Wilton next, Monday at 4 p.m.
