TRUMBULL — In their fourth straight single-goal victory, the Staples girls soccer team advanced to the finals of the state-wide LL tournament in a defensive battle versus Fairfield Warde.

Tensions were high before the game, as Warde had spanked Staples 3-0 in early October. But, since then the Staples defense has been extraordinary.

Gaby Gonzalez again played with zeal. Her free kick at five minutes in did not score but, later off an Annabel Edwards corner kick, Gonzalez took a header that scored what turned out to be the decisive goal. The offense did have a few opportunities to score later in the match, but several shots flew high over the crossbar.

Cami Kolek and the Staples defense booked its 14th shutout of the season. With less than a minute left, Warde took a free kick near the 20-yard-line; as she’s done again and again, Cami Kolek snagged the ball to secure the Staples victory.

With the 1-0 win, Staples faces Wilton in the state finals Saturday or Sunday. The Warriors did not score a goal against Staples when they met in late September, but neither did Staples in a 0-0 tie. The two teams met again in the FCIAC final, which Staples won 1-0.
