FAIRFIELD–Tossing tees into the air before its match was a unique strategy that worked for the Staples girls golf team before the Wreckers not only won but recorded a season low score against Fairfield Warde at Smith Richardson Golf Course on May 5.

Lucy Hill threw some tees up in the air before the girls teed off.

“It was a good way to decrease anxiety before teeing off š and we shot our season low,” Coach Patty Kondub said.

The tees are printed with the team’s slogan ‘Staples Girls Golf Locked In Tee To Green!’

The Wreckers certainly were locked in, recording a score of 196 to Warde’s 220. The team was led by freshmen Lillian Hallett’s 47, who was also named Staples’ female athlete of the week.

Senior Captain Katelynn Mitchell carded a 48, junior Ryan McGrath was solid with a 49 and junior Hill contributed with a 52.

Staples was on the road again on May 7 and won with a similarly low score, 197-255 over host Danbury at Richter Park Golf Course. The same four Wreckers as top scores: Hill 48, McGrath 49, Hallett 50, Mitchell 51.

The team is still in the hunt to qualify for the June 2 FCIAC Championships and has back-to-back home matches this week: Wednesday, May 13 against Trumbull and Thursday versus Greenwich (weather permitting).
