Connecticut’s elected Democrats panned President Joe Biden’s faltering debate performance — some privately calling it a fatal blow to the 81-year-old candidate’s hopes of neutralizing the age issue — but on Friday most publicly adhered to the private urgings of Biden’s friend and adviser, Chris Dodd.
As relayed by others, the advice from Dodd — himself a former U.S. senator and congressman — was two-fold: One, stay away from any discussion of whether Biden should stand down and let Democratic delegates nominate someone else in Chicago; two, remind voters that one bad debate does not negate four years in the White House.
Connecticut’s two senators, both Democrats — Chris Murphy and Richard Blumenthal — hewed to that line Friday at public events.
Murphy participated in a roundtable discussion in West Hartford on reproductive rights, a central issue in Biden’s campaign to block Donald Trump from returning to the White House.
Murphy, a candidate for re-election whose name will be next to Biden’s on the ballot, would not even entertain a question about whether anyone had suggested to him that senior Democrats open a discussion with Biden about the damage sustained Thursday night and the prospects for moving forward.
“I watched last night’s debate, and I see two totally different visions for the country,” Murphy replied. “I see Donald Trump’s promise to destroy democracy. And I see Joe Biden’s promise to support the middle class and to protect abortion rights and to protect democracy. I think that was pretty clear. I don’t know, I think sometimes we don’t give voters enough credit.”
“We’ll see what the country’s judgment is on the debate,” he said. “We’ll see how many of them actually watched.”
At a ribbon cutting for affordable housing in New Haven, Blumenthal was similarly disciplined.
“This election is about more than just one night’s debate performance. It’s about four years,” Blumenthal said. “I believe that the contrast is so clear, even last night, when Donald Trump spewed falsehoods and refused to answer questions about child care and climate change and extolled the Jan. 6 insurrectionists.”
Dodd, who served with Biden in the Senate, helped vet his vice presidential choices and more recently acted as a special envoy, could not be reached for comment. One friend said Dodd was on the phone all day with Democratic officials.
One Democratic operative said the party’s officials’ refusal to address Biden’s physical fitness had echoes of the Republicans’ refusal to confront Trump’s moral fitness.
“It is ironic. For a long time, many of us have been saying if the Republican Party had any spine, they would stand up and call out Trump for what he is,” said Roy Occhiogrosso, a former campaign consultant.
A key difference, he added, is the Republican silence was a product of fear, while the Democrats’ restraint was due to affection and respect.
State Rep. Vincent J. Candelora of North Branford, the leader of the state House of Representatives Republican minority, was quick to suggest Democrats in the General Assembly find their voices regarding Biden.
“I urge our House and Senate colleagues to break from the charade they’ve helped perpetrate and finally acknowledge the longstanding concerns held by citizens across our state and nation regarding Joe Biden’s declining ability to lead the United States,” Candelora said.
Political pundits, including those generally supportive of Biden and horrified by Trump’s constant and casual assaults on the truth, as well as his newfound status as a convicted felon, went where the elected Democrats would not.
MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough said Biden’s presidency has been “an unqualified success” — but that it is time for Democrats to “decide whether this man we’ve known and loved for a very long time is up to the task for running for president of the United States.”
Scarborough’s questioning of Biden’s fitness was amplified by a conservative competitor, Fox News.
Thomas L. Friedman, a New York Times columnist, wrote that he wept watching the debate from a hotel room overseas, saying he could not remember “a more heartbreaking moment in American presidential campaign politics.” He called Biden a good man and a good president who must bow out.
The significance is that both men are known to have the president as a viewer and reader.
While U.S. senators in Connecticut and elsewhere urged restraint, other Democrats described a nightmarish experience watching the 90-minute debate, an unusually early head-to-head event first suggested by a Biden campaign encouraged by the president’s better performance at the State of the Union address.
Democrats texted each other, or exchanged calls, seeking support. State Sen. Derek Slap, D-West Hartford, called watching it a “gut punch.”
Biden slowly walked on stage in the studio in Atlanta. At times, his mouth fell agape staring at Trump.
The debate format called for the candidates, not the moderators, to fact-check each other. And Biden rarely seemed up to the task, even as online fact-checkers repeatedly and rapidly dinged Trump’s claims.
“It’s hard to debate a liar,” Biden told the White House press pool in a stop at a Waffle House in Atlanta after the debate.
Slap, who participated in Friday’s reproductive rights roundtable with Murphy, mentioned Biden’s performance to Murphy, but only after the event ended.
“Everyone’s a little nervous,” Murphy told him, dropping his voice. “It’ll be OK.”
State Comptroller Sean Scanlon said in an interview the focus on Biden’s hoarse voice and manner helped Trump.
“The president had a bad night, and I think the stakes of this election are really, really high, and Donald Trump also had a bad night in the sense that he was coherently saying some concerning things,” Scanlon said. “And that’s not getting a lot of attention today because of the president’s performance.”
House Speaker Matt Ritter, D-Hartford, said simply, “Yesterday was not a good day for Democrats.”
“The president, he’s going to be the one who has to make this choice, and he’s entitled to make this choice of whether he thinks he can put this campaign together and win this campaign,” Scanlon added.
Biden may talk to Dodd and others, but there likely will be no groundswell forcing him out, Scanlon said.
“I think he’s going to have to make a choice of whether or not he believes that he can win this election, given the stakes that he rightfully says every day are at stake here,” Scanlon said. “And that’s what I think this is going to come down to.”

I appreciate and respect Joe Biden, our president, the man who enacted four major pieces of legislation in his first two years in office. The man who closed the chapter on Covid and enacted economic policies that brought our economy back to life. No president has achieved this level of success since perhaps LBJ. Biden needed to turn inward and focus on sorely ignored domestic infrastructure rebuilding projects that created jobs. His policies are making our roads and bridges safer, restoring manufacturing and making our homeland more secure through the Chips Act. He was the right man, at the right place, at the right time.
President Biden defeated a corrupt, narcissistic, fascist traitor and now convicted felon, determined to (steal our hard fought rights) eliminate our (currently under appreciated) democracy, along with its 248 year old history. Trump is a horrible human being, a pathological liar and a man clearly unfit to lead this nation. If you are incapable of realizing this by now, you never will. For that victory alone, this nation owes Joe Biden their gratitude.
The last time I witnessed a live speech from Joe Biden was in January during his outstanding, State of the Union address. Our president looked strong and presidential.
I watched the entire State of the Union address and was reassured of his ability to govern. The Joe Biden I witnessed during the debate was not the same man I saw in January. I was shocked and deeply saddened from the minute he walked onto the stage Thursday evening. I watched the entire debate and realized we, who believe in freedom, democracy and the Constitution, have a serious problem.
I have taken care of older relatives and I have witnessed the sudden decline that sneaks up on us. President Biden looked weak during the debate. Not weak as in for example; he had a broken arm that would heal in three months and he’d be back to normal. His weakness was both physical and cognitive. He will never look younger and stronger in November. This is something that cannot be fixed. This is what life does to us all and it’s OK.
Unfortunately, it is not OK to be in this condition while holding down the most important job on the planet. My hope is the the President realizes he needs to do what is best for the nation and release his delegates for the selection of an alternate candidate at the convention. There is no shame in this, he has carried the torch for democracy his entire career. For that, we will always love him. We need a youthful leader to continue our current president’s agenda. There is simply too much at stake to risk an election loss to a constituency of fascists determined to abandon NATO, empower Putin, (who no doubt Trump is in bed with) continue the erosion of human rights and the appointment of corrupt and incompetent Supreme Court Justices.
I am sad to admit, we need to pivot to a younger candidate.
President Biden, with all affection and respect, please step aside.
~ Joseph V. Vallone
I agree with much of what you have said Joe, mind you I will say that the writing has been on the wall at least 2 years.
The democrats should have been vetting and looking for strong potential replacement candidates a long long time ago.
I believe the reason they did not do that is that they were enjoying the use of president Biden as their pure puppet whilst others were running the country.
That is not ok !
We did not vote for those “others”.
I am also going to say that I hope by younger candidates Newsom is not in your thoughts, because he is absolutely NOT presidential material.
He has destroyed California, with his very far left policies, and he in my opinion is an example of someone this country absolutely does not need.
I have spoken to many middle of the road democrats and from those conversations none of them are willing to vote for either President Biden at this point, and more vehemently they will not vote for Gavin Newsom.
It will be an interesting next few months watching what happens. But trading Newsom for President Biden would mean assured defeat.
Regardless of Joe Biden’s performance during the debate, the Republicans are running an unhinged candidate who denied the results of the last election, who has said he would not necessarily accept the results of the next election, and who would put himself above the law, for personal gain and not the good of the country.
When I voted for Joe Biden I was voting for the man, but I also voted knowing that he would be surrounded by a team that supported his values, my values, and could (as they have) well manage the business of the nation.
I know it has become a popular meme, but what we have are being served is a choice of two entrees. One is a steaming pile of sh!t and the other is chicken. Given the choice, one doesn’t ask how the chicken is prepared.
If the Republicans pull their seditious felon from the top of the slate, I’m happy to have the Democrats do the same. But the idea that Joe Biden is in any way, shape, or form a greater threat to the U.S. than Donald Trump is absolutely absurd.
What I think Joe Biden should do is campaign hard for the next month. Test himself. Test his endurance and ability to fight for the nation. If he’s up to the task, he will know.
Well Chris on this topic I vehemently disagree.
Biden was already senile when he was elected. It’s been obvious for 3 years.
So no matter how bad the other choice is/was, anything beats our great country being led by a senile puppet ! Even if the alternative is a crook !
Here’s why !
The country is divided for all intents and purposes 50/50.
Every presidential election there are defectors for whatever reason ! That’s how a candidate wins, by persuading 2-3% or less of one party to vote the other.
So now we have a choice between a felon and a senile person in serious cognitive decline which will only accelerate.
Biden did not surround himself with his very left of centre advisors, he wasn’t capable, they hijacked him and are only too thrilled to be able to do so BECAUSE, he is senile. And because they would have never won !!!!! That’s the most important takeout of this !
They cheated with a senile president but that is WRONG !!!!
Because 50plus % of the country is not on that page!!!!!
That’s corruption ! It’s more corrupt than even Trump !
So the 50% on right have a legitimate vote, now the other 50% …. Lots of us are not far left !!!!!?
In fact most of us will vote with the republican candidate if faced with that choice.
So enough of us have zero interest in socialism !
Then we vote republican !
This is fact !and it is normal !
I’m sorry as of right now, as a democrat if my choice is senile Biden run by the posse or trump… I’m voting Trump !
It’s a pile of shit vs a plate of drool !
I’ll take the shit !
And I am a democrat !
Nothing is more corrupt than the guy who tried to encourage an insurrection and deny the election result. Nothing.
If you don’t care about reproductive rights. If you don’t care if fundamentalists inflicting their religion in the public schools. And if you don’t care about the courts being taken over by right-wing activists, I guess Trump is the candidate for you.
It’s a bit late ! That time has passed ! And as a mom of 3 teenage girls , I agree ! Disgraceful !
That was 2016 !
I remember.. we voted for Hilary because of the damage Trump would do ! We knew it was imperative .
And she lost.. shockingly thanks only to comey !!!( that dude we hosted recently ! ) and yes Trump
Inflicted our Supreme Court with the conservative scourge !
Disgusting and vile !
BUT, we had a chance to fix that and we ignored it !
And now thanks to a pathetic Democratic Party we are screwed again. As they deny bidens senility !
Keep pushing him !
He’s done !
He is ridiculous !
And if gavin is the alternate … Trump
Is the winner !
And the democrats were warned !!!! They were too stupid to listen !
The Trump co-conspirators on the Supreme Court would love to have you vote for the guy who couldn’t complete a sentence, who wants to shoot Asylum seekers and demonstrators for human rights, who lies pathologically, has failed financially and morally and has destroyed everyone he touches.
Vote for traitors and your children will never again enjoy the rights we the people have already begun to lose.
