WESTPORT — A Danbury man has been charged with causing a hit-and-run crash on Bayberry Lane in May after the driver of the other car took a photo of his license plate as he fled the scene.

Ever Cabrera-Romero, 26, was charged June 5 with evading responsibility, illegal operation of a motor vehicle with a suspended driver’s license and following too close.

A hit-and-run accident near the intersection of Bayberry Lane and Long Lots Road was reported to police shortly after 8:15 a.m. May 9.

At the scene, the investigating officer was told by the complainant that her vehicle, waiting in a line of traffic on Bayberry Lane, was struck from behind by a black Ford SUV.

The driver, who told the officer she was not injured by the collision’s impact, said that when she got out of her vehicle to inspect the damage, the SUV driver “shrugged his shoulders” and drove from the scene, according to the report.

But as the SUV drove off, the complainant was able to snap a photo of his license plate with her phone and provided it to police.

Police investigating the incident learned the license plate was registered to a Ford SUV owned by Cabrera-Romero, and determined that he was driving the vehicle at the time of the accident.

An arrest warrant was issued, and Cabrera-Romero turned himself in June 5 at Police Department headquarters. He was released after posting $15,000 bond and was scheduled to appear June 28 at state Superior Court in Stamford.
