Editor’s note: following is an opinion submitted by Westport resident Cathy Walsh, a former P&Z chair and member.

Westport deserves a Planning & Zoning Commissioner who understands our town and is ready to lead from day one. Michele Paquette is that candidate.

Michele first became involved in local P&Z matters in 2022, when a text amendment aimed to revitalize Saugatuck was proposed. She advocated for a plan that would enhance the area while preserving its scale and character. Michele stood up for our commuters by opposing changes that would reduce parking and increase congestion. She quickly became a regular contributor to P&Z meetings, both speaking and submitting written comments. (Learn more at www.paquetteforpandz.com)

Michele has done the work. She understands Westport’s zoning, conservation,  flood and erosion control regulations, and she’s committed to upholding the 2017 Plan of Conservation and Development (POCD). Her approach balances smart growth with community concerns, and she brings a collaborative mindset from her successful corporate career that will benefit the entire commission.

Michele is focused on process, transparency, and listening. She will explore every option and work toward solutions that keep Westport thriving. She’s ready to be an active participant in shaping the 2027 POCD.

She’s also committed to restoring in-person public meetings, ensuring residents have direct access to the decision-making process.

Michele is a bi partisan candidate and is endorsed by the Coalition for Westport, the Republican Party, and the Alliance for Saugatuck. She will appear on both the Coalition and Republican lines on the ballot.

Full disclosure: I’m Michele’s Treasurer. I served on the P&Z Commission for 13 years, including four as Chair. I’ve worked with many commissioners, and I believe Michele will be one of the best Westport has ever had.
