WESTPORT–A Westport man was charged with driving under the influence on Friday night after he allegedly pinballed his way along Hillandale Road, striking several objects, including a mailbox and a fire hydrant, and stopping near Wakeman Road only when he crashed into a tree – which toppled onto a fence, damaging it.
Police arrived at the accident scene shortly before 9 p.m. and saw that Allen Royce, 43, “reportedly exhibited physical clues consistent with being under the influence of alcohol,” according to a police statement on the arrest.
“Standardized field sobriety tests were administered and reportedly not performed to standard,” the statement said. “Royce was taken into custody on the suspicion of driving under the influence.”
Royce refused to submit to chemical breath testing, police said.
He was charged with reckless driving, illegal operation of a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol/drugs and failure to drive in the proper lane. Royce posted bond on $500 bail and is due in Superior Court in Stamford on June 12.
