WESTPORT — A 59-year-old Norwalk man has been identified as the driver killed in a two-car crash that shut down Saugatuck Avenue for hours Monday.

Mark Lemoult was the driver pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which occurred about 4:20 p.m. Monday on the stretch of Saugatuck Avenue between Duck Pond Road and Ferry Lane, police said.

No other details about the accident were released midday Tuesday, other than circumstances of the crash remain under investigation.

The two cars collided in the area of 294 Saugatuck Ave. — causing extensive damage to both vehicles — forcing the stretch of Saugatuck — also, state Route 136 — to be closed to traffic for hours during emergency operations.

A driver was the sole occupant of each vehicle, police said.

One of the drivers — Lemoult — was “unresponsive and did not have a pulse,” police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel.

Lemoult’s identity was not released Monday, pending notification of his family.

The other driver, who had to be extricated from the wreck, was “conscious and able to speak with emergency responders,” according to the report. That victim was taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries.

No information about the hospitalized driver was available Tuesday.

The accident was investigated by the Westport Police Department’s Accident Investigation Team, assisted by a team from Fairfield police.
