WESTPORT — People are invited to dispose of unwanted or unused prescription drugs during a collection program organized Saturday by Westport police at the Aspetuck Health District.

The collection, planned in collaboration with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, at the health district offices, 180 Bayberry Lane. Local co-sponsors are Westport Together and the health district.

“National Prescription Drug Take Back Day” is a free and anonymous program, according to organizers. The aim is to reduce the number of overdoses caused by misuse of drugs, often by people for whom a prescription was not issued.

Illegal drugs, needles or sharps will not be accepted at the collection site.

Drugs that can be dropped off include pills, patches and liquid products, such as cough syrup, which should have caps sealed to prevent leakage. Only vape pens with removable batteries will be accepted.

“Take Back Day is a critical effort to curb the historic surge in U.S. overdoses. We know prevention starts at home,” Anne Milgram, the DEA administrator, said in a statement. “The simple step of clearing out medications that are no longer needed makes our homes safer, prevents prescription drug misuse and, ultimately, can help save lives.”

There also is a collection bin in the lobby of Westport Police Department headquarters, 50 Jesup Road, where prescription drugs can be disposed of at any time, according to the announcement.
