WESTPORT — Outdoor burning has been banned in town Tuesday until further notice by fire officials, warning that the warm, extremely dry weather conditions could spark brush and forest fires.

The fire danger is underscored by the National Weather Service, which has issued a “Red Flag Warning” for Westport and the region at least through 8 p.m. Tuesday. An additional “Fire Weather Watch” has been issued from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

In a statement banning open burning in Westport, Fire Marshal Terrence Dunn said, “This ban includes all recreational campfires and fire pits. Please recognize that brush fires will spread rapidly possibly threatening homes and property.

“Do not try to self-extinguish and call 911 immediately,” Dunn added.
