WESTPORT — Two Waterbury men, accused of committing a violent home invasion and carjacking on Bayberry Lane last September, were charged last week with the earlier theft of a car used to carry out the crimes.

Vincys Baez, 20, and Garrett Gibbs, 22, both face new charges of first-degree larceny and conspiracy to commit first-degree larceny.

The men are accused of stealing a black 2021 BMW parked on Church Lane last Sept. 16, which police said was left unlocked with the key fob inside.

The next day, police said the suspects, joined by a juvenile accomplice, used the BMW to tail a man driving an Aston Martin convertible to his Bayberry Lane home. There, the masked intruders dragged the man from the car and beat him, before fleeing the scene in both the Aston Martin and BMW.

A home surveillance video recording of the violent incident, later released to the public by police, shocked the town and prompted officials to hold a forum on car thefts a few days later.

Both the Aston Martin and BMW, along with several other stolen imported vehicles, were recovered a day after the incident at what police called a “chop shop” in the upstate town of Berlin.

Giovanni Lopez, 16, also of Waterbury, who police said was the men’s juvenile accomplice, was arrested two days after the carjacking and charged as an adult.

Gibbs was arrested Oct. 6 and Baez was taken into custody Oct. 18.

All three suspects face a lengthy list of charges in connection with the Sept. 17 home invasion/carjacking.

The new charges against Baez and Gibbs were lodged after an investigation into the theft of the BMW on Church Lane, using forensic and digital evidence, surveillance footage and information shared with other law-enforcement agencies, according to police.

On April 3, both men were arrested again while at state Superior Court in Stamford. Bond for each was set at $250,000, and they were arraigned on the new changes later that day.
