WESTPORT — A New York woman, considered a serial shoplifter by police, has been charged with theft at the local Ulta Beauty store earlier this year.
Catherine Sanoja, 20, of New York City, N.Y., was charged July 10 with organized retail theft, second-degree larceny and conspiracy to commit second-degree larceny.
Sanoja’s arrest results from a police investigation into a shoplifting incident reported Feb. 14 at the Ulta Beauty store, 1365 Post Road East — a frequent target by thieves over the last several years.
After store employees reported the shoplifting to police, along with descriptions of the suspect and the white Hyundai getaway car, an officer on patrol spotted the vehicle. However, the officer was unable to stop the car before it fled town via Interstate 95, police said.
Investigators, using footage from store surveillance cameras and information shared with other law-enforcement agencies, identified Sanoja as the shoplifting suspect.
A warrant for Sanoja’s arrest was issued, and she was taken into custody July 10 by Westport police detectives at the Westchester County Correctional Center in New York where she was being held.
Sanoja was transported to Police Department headquarters, where she was formally charged and held on $50,000 bond. She was unable to post bond, police said, and arraigned the next day at state Superior Court in Stamford.
