WESTPORT — A New York man faces charges of stealing checks from mail in town.

Anderson Labadie-Matos, 24, of Bronx, N.Y., was charged May 29 with third-degree identity theft, illegal possession of personal identification and illegal traffic in personal identification.

Westport police were alerted last August by New Canaan police that Labadie-Matos, who was being investigated for mail theft in that town, had also apparently stolen mail in Westport.

Westport police investigating that report said they were able to identify Labadie-Matos as the suspect in several local mail-theft incidents.

Using cellphone data police obtained after securing a search warrant, Labadie-Matos was determined to have been “stealing and/or [was] in possession of stolen checks from various residents in Westport,” according to the report.

A warrant for Labadie-Matos’s arrest was issued, and he was charged May 29 at New Canaan Police Department headquarters, where he was being held.

He was released after posting $50,000 bond and is scheduled to be arraigned June 7 at state Superior Court in Stamford.
