WESTPORT — A New York man has been charged with burglarizing a Riverside Avenue auto repair business last year.
Rickford Vyphuis, 34, of Queens, N.Y., was charged last week with third-degree burglary and sixth-degree larceny in connection with the break-in.
Police were alerted that a burglar alarm was triggered at Westport Auto Craft, 313 Riverside Ave., at 1:35 a.m. Aug. 7, 2022.
Intruders were not at the scene when officers arrived, but keys, envelopes with checks and miscellaneous paperwork were reported stolen, police said.
Later that day, Westport police were notified by authorities in Mamaroneck, N.Y., that a suspect was apprehended during a similar attempted burglary in that town.
The suspect — identified as Vyphuis — allegedly had in his possession items that were reported stolen in the Westport incident, according to the report.
After police confirmed the recovered items were among things reported stolen from Westport Auto Craft, supplemented by further investigation that included reviewing cellphone data, a warrant was issued for Vyphuis’ arrest.
He turned himself in Oct. 4 at Police Department headquarters and was released after posting $75,000 bond. He is scheduled to be arraigned Oct. 18 at state Superior Court in Stamford.
