WESTPORT — A Pennsylvania man is accused of stealing two checks placed in the mailbox outside the local U.S. Postal Service office and fraudulently cashing them in his name.

Danny Valerio-Tineo, 36, of Philadelphia, Pa., was charged Aug. 26 with first-degree larceny and third-degree identity theft in connection with the theft reported last year.

Police received a complaint last Oct. 27 that two checks dropped in the blue Postal Service mailbox at 275 Post Road East apparently were stolen, and while the payment amount was not changed, both were made payable to a new recipient — “Danny Dariel Valerio-Tineo” — before being deposited, according to the report.

Investigators used search warrants, video surveillance recordings and digital evidence to identify Valerio-Tineo as the suspect in the case, police said.

A warrant for his arrest was issued, and he turned himself in Aug. 26 at Police Department headquarters, where he was formally charged.

Valerio-Tineo was released after posting $25,000 bond and is scheduled to be arraigned Sept. 30 at state Superior Court in Stamford.
