WESTPORT — A 39-year-old man, arrested twice earlier this year on larceny and burglary charges, faces new insurance fraud and related allegations, police said.

Zachary Elson, of Westport, was charged last week with insurance fraud, conspiracy to commit insurance fraud, first-degree criminal attempt to commit larceny, second-degree falsely reporting an incident and tampering with or fabricating physical evidence.

Elson in February was charged with trying to sell an expensive scanner he allegedly stole to undercover officers, and in early March was charged with allegedly stealing items in storage on Saugatuck Avenue.

The latest charges, according to the report, date to last October when Elson reported to police that $30,000 worth of his possessions had been stolen sometime the previous month from a basement storage area on Saugatuck Avenue.

After Elson reported the alleged theft to police, they were contacted by an insurance investigator reviewing the claim he had filed for reimbursement. The investigator told police that Elson’s claim was denied because he could not provide receipts or serial numbers for the possessions that he claimed were stolen, according to the report.

Elson later provided the insurer with what he said were receipts for the stolen items, police said, but the claim was denied again because the company believed the receipts were forged.

Based on evidence provided by the insurance company, as well as other details of the investigation, police said they determined the claims filed by Elson were false.

A warrant for Elson’s arrest was issued, and he was charged March 30. He was arraigned on the charges later that day at state Superior Court in Stamford.
