WESTPORT — A 66-year-old man was charged with driving while impaired after an incident at Compo Beach last week.

Jeffrey Kern, of Westport, was charged Oct. 27 with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and operating a motor vehicle without a valid driver’s license.

Police received a report about 7:15 p.m. Oct. 27 that a man, who appeared to be intoxicated, was stumbling around the beach parking lot and had yelled at another person.

When the suspect started driving from the lot, an officer dispatched to the scene stopped the vehicle.

The officer talking with the driver — later identified as Kern — “immediately smelled the odor of alcoholic beverage,” according to the report.

Kern was unable to perform a field sobriety test to standard, police said, and was placed under arrest.

The officer also determined that Kern lacked a valid driver’s license.

Kern was released after posting $500 bond, and is scheduled for a Nov. 17 appearance at state Superior Court in Stamford.
