WESTPORT — A Bridgeport man faces a slew of charges in connection with a series of burglaries at smoke shops in the region, including two Westport businesses last summer, police said.
Marcos Scott, 20, was charged Feb. 28 with two counts of third-degree burglary, conspiracy to commit third-degree burglary, first-degree criminal mischief, second-degree criminal mischief, conspiracy to commit second-degree criminal mischief, two counts of fourth-degree larceny and conspiracy to commit fourth-degree larceny for his role in two local incidents.
The first burglary was reported about 4:15 a.m. last July 7 when police dispatched to investigate an activated alarm at Westport Cigar & Vape, 1248 Post Road East, spotted intruders running from the shop, according to the report. Officers were unable to stop the suspects’ fleeing vehicle.
Video-surveillance recordings showed that three people entered the shop after a brick was tossed through a front window, allowing the suspects to enter and steal merchandise, police said.
Another break-in was reported about 3:15 a.m. last July 19 at Mohegan Smoke Shop, 1850 Post Road East, and police said they were able to determine the burglary also was carried out by suspects in the earlier incident. Those suspects, using the same vehicle, “were committing the same crimes in numerous communities throughout the region,” according the report.
On July 26, Monroe police were alerted to a break-in about 1:15 a.m. at a smoke shop in that town and notified police in area communities. Police in nearby Newtown were able to locate the vehicle reportedly used by suspects in that break-in and took Marcos Scott into custody.
Scott was initially charged in connection with the break-in at the Monroe smoke shop. But Westport investigators, using “digital evidence” and information shared with area law-enforcement agencies, identified Scott as a suspect in the two local burglaries earlier in the month, police said.
Scott was arrested Feb. 28 by a Westport police detective at state Superior Court in Stamford, where he was appearing to answer other charges. Scott was held on total bond of $30,000 for arraignment that day on the Westport charges.
