WESTPORT — A Pennsylvania man has been arrested on a series of charges in connection with a check stolen from a local U.S. Postal Service box and altering it for personal use.
Kelvin Gonzalez, 23, of Whitehall, Pa., faces charges of first-degree identity theft, criminal impersonation, second-degree forgery, second-degree larceny and illegal use of a payment card.
A complainant told police last January that after putting a check in the mail using the Postal Service mailbox on Myrtle Avenue, it had been stolen and both the payee’s name and amount were altered.
The new payee name was “Kelvin Gonzalez,” according to the report, a person unknown to the complainant.
The detective investigating the case learned the check had been deposited using an ATM at a JP Morgan Chase bank office in the Bronx, N.Y. The account was held in Gonzalez’s name, police said.
Based on that information and additional evidence, police said, a warrant for the arrest of Gonzalez was issued.
Gonzalez turned himself in April 19 at Police Department headquarters.
He was released after posting $50,000 bond and is scheduled to be arraigned on the charges April 29 at state Superior Court in Stamford.
