WESTPORT — A Monroe man faces charges after police said he abandoned his vehicle in the middle of the road after crashing during a snowstorm earlier this month.

Thomas Bertagnoli, 37, was charged with evading responsibility and failure to remove a motor vehicle from the highway in connection with the Feb. 6 incident.

Police said a vehicle, with “fresh” damage from an accident, was found in the middle of Easton Road on Feb. 6. The officer dispatched to the scene did not find the driver at the site, police said.

The officer investigating the accident contacted the person in whose name the vehicle was registered — identified as Bertagnoli — who “admitted to sliding off the road during a snowstorm, hitting a telephone pole and leaving the scene of the crash,” according to the report.

Bertagnoli was formally charged Feb. 10, posted $20,000 bond and scheduled for arraignment March 4 at state Superior Court in Stamford.
