WESTPORT — A driver who left the scene of an early-morning crash on Post Road East faces charges of driving under the influence and possession of illegal drugs when police caught up with him after his vehicle became disabled.

James Fordham, 59, of Stamford, was charged June 14 with driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, illegal possession of a controlled substance and failure to drive right.

Police received the report of a crash at 1:30 a.m. June 14, near Fire Department headquarters on Post Road East, where the driver struck a telephone pole and curb, and then fled the scene.

The driver — identified by police as James Fordham — continued driving west on Post Road East, but later was found by officers on Compo Road North, where his vehicle became disabled.

Fordham allegedly was “unable to provide any information on how the crash occurred and appeared to be under the influence of alcohol and or drugs,” according to the report.

Police also said “crack cocaine was found in the vehicle.”

Fordham could not perform a field sobriety test to standard, police said, and was taken into custody.

He was taken to Police Department headquarters, formally charged and later released after posting $4,285.72 bond. He is scheduled to appear July 29 at state Superior Court in Stamford.
