WESTPORT — A Bridgeport man, charged with fleeing the scene of a hit-and-run crash at Greens Farms Road and Compo Road South, was driving while impaired and had a controlled substance in his possession, police said.
Johnnie Newkirk, 49, was charged June 23 with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, illegal possession of a controlled substance, evading responsibility and following too closely in connection with the incident.
Officers were dispatched to investigate a report that a driver had left the scene of a rear-end collision at the Greens Farms Road and Compo Road South intersection, about 7 p.m. June 23.
The responsible vehicle driven by a man identified by police as Johnnie Newkirk was stopped by officers a short time later on Compo Road South.
Newkirk, who appeared to be impaired, according to the report, was unable to perform a field sobriety test to standard, police said.
He was taken into custody and transported to Police Department headquarters, where he allegedly was found to be in possession of the illegal substance ecstasy, police said.
Newkirk was formally charged and released after posting $500 bond. He is scheduled to be arraigned July 15 at state Superior Court in Stamford.
