WESTPORT — A Wilton man has been charged with driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol after his car struck a tree on Sylvan Road North earlier this year.

John Egan, 46, in addition to DUI, was charged with failure to drive right.

The incident took place shortly before 6 p.m. Jan. 25 when police were dispatched to investigate an accident in the area of 75 Sylvan Road North.

At the scene, officers found the car Egan was driving had crashed into a tree, injuring Egan and causing significant front-end damage to the vehicle, police said.

The was a strong odor of alcohol on Egan’s breath, according to the report, and “his speech was slow as well as slurred.”

He was transported to a hospital for treatment of his injuries.

The officer investigating the accident secured a search warrant for results of Egan’s toxicology report from the hospital. The report showed Egan’s blood-alcohol content was above the legal limit at the time of the crash, police said.

A warrant for Egan’s arrest was issued, and on March 18 he turned himself in at Police Department headquarters.

He was released after posting $5,000 bond, and is scheduled to be arraigned on the charges March 30 at state Superior Court in Stamford.
