WESTPORT — Want a better understanding of the Police Department and its officers?

A “Citizens Police Academy,” an eight-session program open to 25 members of the general public over age 21, will offer insights into various aspects of law enforcement carried out by Westport police.

The program is scheduled to begin Oct. 5, with the deadline to apply by Sept. 18.

Participants will learn about the Police Department’s divisions and specialized units, as well as how the agency operates.

Classes, led by trained and experienced officers, will involve demonstrations and hands-on experience of basic police equipment, according to program organizers.

Students also will have a chance to join an officer on patrol for a “ride-along,” and be given CPR/AED training.

Academy classes are scheduled to meet from 7-9:30 p.m. Thursdays on the following dates: Oct. 5, 12, 19 and 26; Nov. 2, 16 and 30, and on Wednesday, Dec. 6.

Residents of Westport 21 years old and over are eligible to apply.

Applications can be picked up at Police Department headquarters, 50 Jesup Road, and must be returned by Monday, Sept. 18, at headquarters, attention of Lt. Jillian Cabana, or emailed to Officer Ed Wooldridge at ewooldridge@westportct.gov.
