WESTPORT–A Fairfield man was arrested after he allegedly crashed his Tesla sedan into large rocks on Sturges Highway and then walked away from the wreck, Westport police said.

Joshua Burwick, 50, allegedly crashed the car near 221 Sturges Highway just after 9 p.m. on July 17. Police were notified twice by an iPhone crash detection system, but when officers called, the person answering denied being in an accident.

A witness, however, reported a Tesla, damaged, disabled and unoccupied, in the middle of Sturges Highway, police said.

“Investigation of the crash suggested that while traveling northbound on Sturges Highway the vehicle had left the roadway twice striking several large rocks and sustaining significant damage before becoming disabled in the middle of the travel portion of the road,” a police announcement said.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     

Further investigation showed Burwick as the registered owner, and allegedly as the one who had been driving. A warrant was issued for his arrest.                                                                                                                                       

On Tuesday night, Burwick went to Westport police headquarters, where he was charged with evading responsibility, traveling too fast for conditions, failure to drive on the right and second-degree reckless endangerment. 

He was released on $5,000 bond and is due in Superior Court in Stamford, court records show.
