WESTPORT–A Westport Man was charged with driving under the influence after he allegedly left a trail of damage along Kings Highway North in a Tesla Model 3 and stopped in the roadway on Post Road West, Westport police said.
Police found James Rhodes, 63, in the car partially blocking the major artery’s westbound lanes near Sylvan Road North on Jan. 21. The vehicle’s front end was badly damaged. Rhodes “allegedly exhibited physical signs of intoxication and had an odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath,” police said in an announcement.
Further investigation showed that the damage was caused when the sport sedan struck several objects – a mailbox, sign, shrubbery, utility pole and its guy wire – on Kings Highway North, police said.
Rhodes failed field sobriety tests and was taken to police headquarters, where he refused to take a breath test, police said. He was charged with operating under the influence and evading responsibility for an accident. He was released on $500 bond and is due in Superior Court in Stamford on Feb. 6.
