WESTPORT — Two men were charged with a host of illegal drug charges Wednesday after cocaine and crack, mixed with deadly fentanyl, were found during a traffic stop on Sherwood Island Connector, police said.

The two suspects arrested in the case were identified Thursday morning as Tyrone Wilkes, 33, and John Verner, 30, both of Bridgeport.

The incident unfolded shortly 9:30 a.m. Wednesday when a car carrying four men was pulled over for a motor vehicle violation, according to the report.

As Verner, the driver, was retrieving paperwork from the glove compartment, the officer who stopped the car spotted a plastic bag holding several red capsules, which he recognized as the type typically used to package crack cocaine, police said.

When the officer radioed for police backup at the scene, Wilkes, the front-seat passenger, bolted from the car and fled into woods near the connector’s commuter parking lot, according to the report.

As Wilkes fled, he tossed aside suspected narcotics and a scale, police said, but was taken into custody after a brief struggle with pursuing officers.

The three other men did not try to flee from the vehicle.

The suspected narcotics thrown away during the foot chase were recovered and later tested. The results showed the substances were cocaine and crack, both mixed with fentanyl, according to the report.

The crack cocaine weighed 12 grams and the cocaine weighed 60 grams, police said.

Wilkes and Verner were not immediately identified Wednesday as police continued the investigation to confirm their identities.

Wilkes faces charges of possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell, illegal operation of a drug factory, possession of drug paraphernalia, tampering with evidence, assault on a public safety officer and interfering with an officer. He was held on a $75,000 bond.

Verner was charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell, possession of drug paraphernalia, interfering with an officer, criminal impersonation, misuse of a license plate, operating an unregistered motor vehicle, operating a motor vehicle without insurance, illegal tinting and operating without a license. He was held on a $51,000 bond.

Each of the men posted their respective bonds, police said Thursday, and are scheduled to be arraigned on the charges Sept. 14 at state Superior Court in Stamford.

Another man in the car was taken into custody because he is wanted outstanding warrants in other communities, police said.
