WESTPORT — A smoky fire in the basement of a Horseshoe Lane home was quickly extinguished Christmas night by firefighters.
Fire crews were dispatched to the scene shortly after 9:30 p.m. Wednesday after a “911” emergency call was received from the homeowner. A call reporting the fire also was received from the home’s fire-monitoring service, according to the report by Assistant Fire Chief Brett Kirby.
Four engines, a ladder truck and the shift commander answered the call, and Norwalk firefighters provided assistance.
The home’s occupants had safely left the premises when firefighters arrived on the scene.
Firefighters from Engine 4, first on the scene, found light smoke filling the building’s first floor, and proceeding to the basement, they encountered thick smoke.
The site of the fire’s ignition was located and the blaze was doused before it spread.
After ensuring the fire had not extended to any other part of the structure, firefighters ventilated smoke and carbon monoxide from the building.
Police and EMS were also on scene to provide assistance if needed, according to the report.
