WESTPORT–A Brooklyn man is due in state court next month on charges that he stole $89,000 from another man’s bank account in January 2025, Westport police said.
The alleged victim told Westport police at the time he had been advised that someone had transferred the money from his account to another in person at an M&T Bank branch in New York State.
A Westport police investigation into the bank fraud led to John Hammonds, 38, as a suspect, police said. A warrant was issued for his arrest.
On Aug. 20, authorities in New Jersey told Westport Police that they were holding Hammonds on Westport’s warrant. Police brought Hammonds to Connecticut, where he was charged with first-degree larceny and third-degree identity theft, both felonies, police said.
Hammonds is being held on $70,000 bond and is due in Superior Court in Stamford on Nov. 9, court records show.
