WESTPORT–Trumpeter Michael Mossman will perform at the VFW Post 399 this Thursday, Oct. 1. The show is part of the Jazz at the Post series, which offers a new concert each Thursday, presented by the Jazz Society of Fairfield County.
Mossman will be joined by Oscar Perez on piano, Alex “Apolo” Ayala on bass, Greg Wall on saxophones, David Alvarez III on drums and Gabriel Globus on percussion.
According to the release, after apprenticing as a youngster with jazz legends Lionel Hampton, Dizzy Gillespie, Art Blakey, Horace Silver and others, Mossman took center stage as music director for Blue Note Records’ “boy band”, Out of the Blue, while still in his 20’s. Mossman has been a key performer in Latin jazz, having performed and recorded with Tito Puente, Eddie Palmieri, Chico O’Farrill, Ray Barretto, Daniel Ponce, Israel “Cachao” Lopez, Paquito D’Rivera, Bebo Valdez and Michel Camilo, receiving Grammys for his work with the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra and his arrangements for the legendary Joe Henderson.
Musical sets begin at 7 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. The 7 p.m. set cover charge is $20 ($15 for students / veterans). The cover fee for the late set is $10.
An optional dinner from Chef Derek Furino will be served from 6:15 p.m., no reservations required.
The Jazz Society of Fairfield County offers “free or low-cost concerts by accomplished artists, outreach to under-served audiences, and educational and performance opportunities for student, amateur and emerging professional musicians,” its website says.
Since 2015, the organization has worked with Post 399 to bring the weekly jazz event to the post’s home on the Saugatuck River, featuring “celebrated jazz artists such as Ethan Iverson, Antonio Hart, David Kikoski, Harvie S and Joe Farnsworth as well as introducing our audience to the new generation of musicians moving the tradition forward,” the society’s website says.
