WESTPORT — Drivers be advised.

Thursday may be a holiday, but there will be plenty of traffic on some local streets.

Foot traffic, that is.

Thousands of runners will flood local streets Thursday morning for the Pequot Runners’ 5-mile Thanksgiving Day Race, and police warn that the holiday’s traffic along the route is expected to be “stuffed” for several hours.

The event starts shortly after 8 a.m. Thursday in the Southport section of Fairfield, but much of the race course then moves into Westport.

Runners, starting on Pequot Avenue in Southport, follow the course north onto Sasco Creek Road into Westport, then east on Greens Farms Road, northwest on Clapboard Hill Road, south on Maple Avenue South, west on Greens Farms Road, south on New Creek Road and finally east on Beachside Avenue before re-entering Southport for the finish line.

Police expect that Westport streets will be cleared of the runners by about 11 a.m.

However, during the approximate three-hour span that runners will be on the Westport segment of the race, police warn drivers and residents on affected streets to expect temporary road closures and traffic detours.
