WESTPORT — One driver was killed in a two-car crash that shut down a stretch of Saugatuck Avenue on Monday afternoon.

Two cars collided in the area of 294 Saugatuck Ave. — causing extensive damage to both vehicles — about 4:20 p.m. Monday, forcing the stretch of road between Duck Pond Road and Ferry Lane to be shot down for emergency operations.

The driver was the lone occupant of each vehicle, police said.

One of the drivers was “unresponsive and did not have a pulse,” police said. That person was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel.

The identity of the deceased driver was not immediately released, pending notification of family, police said.

The other driver, who had to be extricated from the wreck, was “conscious and able to speak with emergency responders,” according to the report. That victim was taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries.

Saugatuck Avenue, between Duck Pond Road and Ferry Lane, remains shut down at 7:30 p.m. Monday, police said, and is expected to remain closed for several hours as the crash scene is investigated.

The accident is being investigated by the Westport Police Department’s Accident Investigation Team, assisted by a team from Fairfield police.
