To the editor:
These are the times that try men’s souls.
This is the time for public expression of outrage against the threat that Trump and his goons pose to democracy and the rule of law, and Westport Democrats should be leading the charge.
We are fortunate to have extraordinary leadership in Congress and the state legislature who would, I am sure, be willing to participate in an organized public event.
This is the time for Westport Democrats and the Democratic Town Committee to show that they are more than a distributor of lawn signs by sponsoring and organizing a local mass protest against the implementation of Project 2025 in disregard for the law, the Constitution and the societal norms that are fundamental to our democracy.
In the words of Elie Wiesel:
“There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.”
Mary-Lou and Larry Weisman, Westport

Resistance to the will of elected President of these United states is unamerican because after an election is the time where everybody comes together. You might no agree with every issue but we all play a part in what Rousseau calls The Social Contract. Get with the program. We have a 3 way system of government. If you had such passion for the rule of law, you see through the proaganda and brainwashing that is forming your thoughts. Remember, if you are outraged then you have been triggered and your are being manipulated through your emotional state.
A “3 way system of government” doesn’t involve using executive orders to eliminate departments created by and funded by Congress. Those are clear Constitutional violations. Civics class is your friend.
If the Republicans want to eliminate the Department of Education, Congress can do it, rather than deferring to Trump and Elmo.
Thats right congress can do it, if they want. The voters have spoken. Thats the great part about it, everybody gets a voice. Thanks Elon, for saving free speech from the fascists. Hallelujah
I would like to quote from Joyce Vance’s Substack feed, Civil Discourse:
What we’ve seen over the last two weeks and accelerating over the weekend looks like a coup, a hostile, undemocratic takeover of government. Merriam-Webster says a coup is “a sudden decisive exercise of force in politics and especially the violent overthrow or alteration of an existing government by a small group.” No violence so far because this is a coup fueled by tech bros, not the military. But we’re watching the alteration of government happen before our eyes.

I agree, sometimes what the people vote for is change so drastic, that to the losing side –there is a tendency towards feeling degected. Where every action taken by the duly elected party feels like a crime. When a party is ruled by a puppet master one can find it easy to digest the lies, such as 35 trillion in debt is ok, or we need censorship and if you dont go along with it you are a racist or rapist or nazi. The marxist tactics used by the Biden admin have been halted aggressively by the American people. No longer is the justice department to be weoponized, no longer will usaid be used as a 40 billion dollar slush fund fir kickbacks and propaganda. No longer will the legacy media outlets be given a pass for the regurgitation of talking points crafted by rouge elements from within the intelligence sphere.
It can feel like a revolution yet it is only an election.
With all due respect, Mr. and Mrs. Weisman, you should look into the executive orders passed by Joe Biden, specifically regarding the border and resulting in great danger to the American people and in violation of federal immigration law. BTW, there was an “organized public event”, it’s called an election. The people have spoken. Thank God Westport, CT. is not representative of the rest of the country.
Yes, yes, and yes. Westport needs to come out in massive numbers to protest the fascistic takeover of the federal government by the very dangerous people who are occupying the government offices in Washington. Never has there been a group of more incompetent and dangerous personalities being asked to oversee the most important agencies that govern us and keep us safe (hopefully). One is worse than the other. And it’s Trump’s sick ego and lack of any moral compass and need for revenge that has driven his dangerous choices for Cabinet positions. Not one person on that list is qualified to even scoop trash from the streets. Nothing that Trump stands for or is attempting to implement reflects the values of the people who live in Westport and the numbers from the recent election speak to that. Republicans were soundly defeated at the polls in Westport in November and they will be soundly defeated at the polls again in November 2025 and November 2026. But until then, we need to raise our voices and protest Trump’s attempt to overthrow our Constitution.
