Following is the obituary for NICHOLAS T. SAVIANO JR., submitted for the family by the Harding Funeral Home.

Nicholas T. Saviano Jr., of Westport, passed away quietly at home Friday morning, Nov. 12, 2021. 

Nick was the second son of Nicholas T. and Rose A. (Fiorillo) Saviano. He attended school in Westport, graduating from Staples High School in 1947. On scholarship, he earned a bachelor’s degree from Union College in Schenectady, N.Y., and a master’s degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Mass. He was inducted into Sigma Xi Honor Society.

Nick was a lifelong resident of Westport. He was an avid reader and enjoyed many hobbies during his life, including photography, horseback riding, skiing, wine making, family genealogy, aviation and navigation. 

In his younger years, he owned a small private plane with his older brother. He liked traveling and traveled throughout the country and to several other countries, including Italy and China with family and friends. 

For most of his career he worked as an electrical engineer at Sperry Rand/Unisys in New York as the senior research section head, Software Development, Shipboard and Ground Systems Group. Nick also held a number of patents.

He enjoyed being a volunteer for many years at the Westport Library and the Sons of Italy. For several years, he was an usher at the Assumption Church. He was devoted to his family and friends, and always willing to help out

He was predeceased by his mother and father of Westport, his elder brother, Ralph of Massachusetts, his nephew David and his wife Joanne of New Hampshire, and several dear life-long friends.  

He is survived by his sister Florence of Stratford; his brother Thomas of Westport; his nieces Dyana (Jack) and Felicia (Keith), both of Monroe; his niece Suzanne (Jim) of New Hampshire; his nephew Mark (Masako) of Colorado; four great-nieces, six great-nephews, two great great-nephews, a great great-niece and seven God children. 

Family and friends are invited to attend a funeral on Saturday, Dec. 4, at 10 a.m., meeting directly at Assumption Church, 98 Riverside Ave., Westport, for a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in Assumption-Greens Farms Cemetery, 57 Greens Farms Road, Westport. 

There will be a reception immediately following the burial at Christ and Holy Trinity Church, 75 Church Lane, Westport. Gifts may be given in Nick’s memory to Union College, click here.
