WESTPORT — “Best friend” or not, they still need a license.

Dog owners are required to secure a license for their pets for the year starting July 1 through June 30, 2024.

All dogs in Westport, over six months old, must have a license. A copy of a dog’s current rabies certificate must be submitted to obtain a license.

The license fee is $8 for a neutered male or spayed female, and otherwise $19. A $1 penalty will be issued per month for licenses renewed after June 30, according to an announcement from the Town Clerk’s Office.

Pet owners face a $75 infraction for any dog that is not licensed and for a dog not wearing a valid tag attached to a collar around its neck or body.

Dog licenses can be obtained online, by mail or in person from the Town Clerk’s Office.

License renewal forms also can be obtained here to mail or drop off at the Town Clerk’s Office at 110 Myrtle Ave., Westport, CT 06880.

The mailed and in-person applications must be accompanied by payment and proof of the dog’s current vaccination status. Mailed applications also should be accompanied by a self-addressed, stamped envelope to receive the new license.
