WESTPORT — Work is underway on a new athletics center at Greens Farms Academy.

The new 30,000-square-foot center, approved in September by the Planning and Zoning Commission, will include two full-size basketball courts, two wrestling rooms, two additional squash courts with viewing galleries, a life-fitness center and training room.

The facilities will be used for athletics at all levels, and also for summer programs.

The new structure, expected to be completed in 2026, will be built on the site of a maintenance building, which will be demolished, close to the Maple Lane side of the campus, behind what school officials promised the P&Z would be enhanced natural screening by trees and plantings.

A ceremonial groundbreaking for the center took place Nov. 19 on the academy’s Beachside Avenue campus, led by Head of School Robert Whelan, joined by school trustees and faculty and student representatives.

“The future site of the Athletics and Wellness Center holds so much promise for competition, collaboration, social and emotional growth, and for building the best versions of ourselves,” Whelan said in a press statement issued by the school.

Construction of the athletics center follows expansion last year of Lower School facilities, including a new dining and student commons and renovated assembly room.
