WESTPORT–Amee Bory’s history at Earthplace goes back nearly two decades, when she was looking for a pre-school spot for her daughter near her Westport home.
“I watched my children grow up here. I wanted them to be able to play around outside, like I grew up, with the freedom to explore and play outdoors,” Borys told Westport Journal.
Borys is Earthplace’s new executive director, replacing Tony McDowell, who will continue to serve Earthplace in fundraising, development and capital planning.
Years of experience
Borys has spent years working on the education side of Earthplace, as a classroom teacher, summer camp counselor, assistant director of the preschool and director of early childhood education.
“The team here is great–they work here because they love it.” It is a special educational environment, which Borys would like to expand on.
More research
When asked about any departures from the immediate past of Earthplace, Borys cited the research done at Harbor Watch, the salt water division of Earthplace.
Harbor Watch’s mission is to deploy a group of scientists to provide the data, knowledge and field expertise needed to safeguard Connecticut waterways. Borys said she’d like to take a page from the Harbor Watch research model and adapt it to Earthplace’s upland site. “I’d like to introduce area high school and college students to using Earthplace as a host site for research of plants, animals and insects,” she said
Borys is the sixth Executive Director and first woman to lead Earthplace in its 65-year history.
