WESTPORT — Twelve Staples High School seniors have qualified as semifinalists in the 70th annual National Merit Scholarship program. 

They are: William Boberski, Kendra Cheng, Alexander Esser, Anna Ji, Angelina Matra, Carolina Proctor, Andrew Rebello, Samuel Rossoni, Megan Sargent, Alexander Sod, Jackson Tracey and Ryan Tzou.

The Staples students are among 16,000 semifinalists nationwide competing for 6,870 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $26 million, according to school officials.

The semifinalists comprise fewer than 1 percent of more than 1.3 million students who took the 2023 PSAT/NMSQT qualifying exam.
