WESTPORT — The Westport Farmers Market will open its 20th season Thursday, May 7, at 50 Imperial Ave. The market, which runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., marks two decades of serving as a cornerstone for local agriculture and community connection.
It will be open at the Imperial Ave. location through November 5, 2025.
Founded in 2005 by Paul Newman and Michel Nischan, the market has evolved from a small gathering into a premier regional institution. Executive Director Lori Cochran-Dougall has led the organization for 17 years, focusing on a mission to sustain regional farmers while providing fresh food access to the community.
“This market was born from an extraordinary vision that food could be a force for connection, health, and justice,” Cochran-Dougall said. “Twenty years later, that vision has never felt more urgent or more alive.”
Opening day festivities will include a community toast at noon, live music, and the Get Growing youth program. Shoppers can expect a mix of long-time favorite vendors alongside several new participants offering seasonal produce and artisanal goods.
Bill Taibe, a Westport chef and board member, emphasized the market’s role in the local economy. “The Westport Farmers Market isn’t just a place to shop. It’s where the relationship between cooks, farmers, and community actually happens,” Taibe said.
As it enters its third decade, the market plans to expand educational partnerships and strengthen food access programs. Information on vendor schedules and updates is available at www.westportfarmersmarket.org.
