WESTPORT — Periodic rain, punctuated by possible thunderstorms, is forecast for the rest of Sunday and Monday — triggering local warnings of flash flooding and coastal flooding.

Rain, gusty winds and strong surf are, in part, being spun off Tropical Storm Ernesto, even though the storm’s main trajectory is far to the east of the Atlantic Coast.

A “Flash Flood Warning” has been issued for this region until 1:30 p.m. Sunday by the National Weather Service, which also has issued a “Coastal Flood Advisory” from 10 p.m. Sunday through 1 a.m. Monday.

Showers, with thunderstorms, are possible throughout Sunday and Monday, according to the NWS forecast, and possibly carrying over to early Tuesday before clearing.

In Westport, officials also issued an alert about the threat of flash flooding through early Sunday afternoon.

Seventy-six power outages in Westport were reported by Eversource as of 1 p.m. Sunday.

Local streams and brooks are on the rise from precipitation that began sweeping across southwestern Connecticut on Saturday evening.

Skies are expected to remain cloudy across the region through Tuesday, with daytime high temperatures in the high-70s both Sunday and Monday.
