WESTPORT — Yes, it’s January, weeks away from the start of the outdoors growing season in the Northeast.

But right now you can sow the seeds of a garden that will attract pollinators that are vital to cultivation next spring and summer.

Learn how to get an early start for this year’s gardening season at a “Winter Sowing Workshop” offered by Wakeman Town Farm at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 10.

The program will be presented via Zoom. Click here for more information and to register. The fee is $10.

Alice Ely, a University of Connecticut advanced master gardener, will explain how to make a “mini-greenhouse” in a bottle to start seedlings. It then can be left outside until spring, when a dozen or more native milkweed seedlings will sprout for re-planting in the garden.

Participants should save bottles to make the mini-greenhouse: Clear 1-liter or 2-liter soda bottles or translucent half-gallon milk bottles are recommended.

“Special milkweed seeds” sourced in this eco-region will be available, and program organizers will provide information about when and where to pick up the seeds from the farm.
