WESTPORT — A search has been launched for the next Westport poet laureate by the Westport Arts Advisory Committee.

The person selected, who will be the third to hold the post, will serve for two years, starting July 1. It is an honorary, uncompensated position.

The role of the town’s poet laureate, according to the committee’s announcement, is to help “elevate poetry in the consciousness of Westport residents and to celebrate and continue the town’s vibrant literary history.”

The post is currently held by Jessica Noyes McEntee, who succeeded Diane Lowman, the first poet laureate.

Candidates should be at least 21 years old, live in Westport and have “a wide range of relevant knowledge and experience,” according to the committee. They also should be comfortable with public speaking and willing to collaborate on programs involving the Westport Library, the public school district and local cultural institutions.

Deadline to apply for the poet laureate position is Friday, May 10. For the application and a detailed description of the role, click here.

Selection of the next poet laureate will be made by a committee with representatives from the Westport public schools, Westport Library and Westport Arts Advisory Committee. The panel will review the applications and interview finalists.
