WESTPORT — The annual Fairfield County “Out of the Darkness Community Walk,” organized to raise awareness about suicide and support prevention programs, will take place Oct. 21 at Sherwood Island State Park.

The event, organized by the Connecticut chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, is set to get underway with registration at 9 a.m. and the walk at 10 o’clock Saturday, Oct. 21, at the park.

The Out of the Darkness walk supports the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s education and support programs, according to event publicity, and the group’s goal to reduce the annual U.S. rate of suicide 20 percent by 2025.

“Suicide touches one in five American families. We hope that by walking we will draw attention to this issue and keep other families from experiencing a suicide loss. Our ultimate goal is to save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide,” Michelle Peters, area director for the AFSP Connecticut chapter, said in a press statement.
